COUNTDOWN TO THE MELLENNIUM--FACES WHO MADE THE NEWS IN THE 1900S--THE SHOVE PANCAKE LADY, MRS. FOSNOT There have been thousands of news stories that have appeared in The Vidette over the past 100 years. So, as we begin our countdown to the millennium, we have decided to run a weekly feature on influential people who made a name for themselves during the past century. As many Montesanans gather at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day, we thought it would be appropriate to feature the lady who was responsible for making those fantastic pancakes in the earlier years, Mrs. Carrie E. "Mother" Fosnot. Mrs. Fosnot was born in Waverly, New York on August 9, 1857. After her marriage, she lived for a time in Iowa and later in Nebraska and Montana, before coming to Montesano in 1889. For many years she was an active leader in the social life of Montesano. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church and for many years headed its Woman's Guild. She was also a member of the Mayflower Circle of the women of woodcraft. Mrs. Fosnot owned and operated a boarding house in Montesano for 40 years, beginning shortly after her arrival here in 1889.--The Vidette, February 11, 1999
